Food for Thought

University of Toronto: I'm an Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream. I have a workload that is set by a Unit Workload Committee that gets re-evaluated every 3 years. (Data Source: Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA)) University of Waterloo: I'm a Definite Term Lecturer. I have a workload that is set by my department chair. I might teach more next year, we'll see.

York University: If I don't get my updated contract in writing within the specified window, my union can escalate the issue to the Labour Board on my behalf. University of Waterloo: I ended up working for a month without a contract last year because my chair and dean didn't get the paperwork in on time. All I had was verbal reassurance.

University of Guelph: My kid needs new glasses again! He only just got new ones last year! Thank goodness I've got $500 of vision coverage annually for dependents under 12. (https://www.uoguelph.ca/hr/system/files/UGFA%20Unit%201%20Employee%20Benefit%20Booklet_January%202023.pdf) University of Waterloo: I don't have any eyewear coverage for myself or my kids. All I get is $85 every two years towards an eye exam!

University of Toronto: As a teaching stream professor I am encouraged to hold research grants like the research stream professors, and a system is in place to make it possible. University of Waterloo: I have negotiated a research component in my Lecturer position, but I am consistently having to fight to hold tri-agency grants.

Queen's University: When Bill 124 was struck down as unconstitutional, my Unionized Faculty Association negotiated three years of across-the-board wage increases of 3.5%, 3%, and 3% ending in 2025. (https://ocufa.on.ca/blog-posts/a-new-contract-at-queens/) University of Waterloo: I got an unclear memo last week about our Bill 124 compensation. I know we got less Queen's did, but the authors still seemed very pleased with this outcome.

University of Waterloo: As a new hire into a tenure-track position I was thrilled to see I can take parental leave with benefits when my kid arrives just one month into my new job! University of Waterloo: As a new hire into a lecturer position I'm not even eligible for parental leave with benefits until I have been here for 12 months!

University of Toronto: As a teaching stream professor I teach full time from September until April, but I only have one block elective course in May and then I'm off for the summer. University of Waterloo: As a lecturer in a unit with co-op I teach core courses to our undergrads 12 months of the year. My friends all think I get summers off... YA RIGHT!

Event Reminder:

Status of Lecturers Forum
Friday, June 9th at 1:30-3:00 p.m.

We are organizing a "Status of Lecturers Forum" on Friday, June 9th at 1:30-3:00 p.m. We have invited some Continuing Lecturers to host the event. We have also extended an invitation to Su-Yin Tan and the FAUW Lecturers Committee to join as speakers and to provide updates regarding Policy 76. We have pooled together a list of questions and points for discussion. There will also be opportunities to ask questions before the event or live during the event.

This forum is a Lecturers-only event and hosted on-line to enable more participation. In order to join the meeting, registration will be required. The meeting will be closely monitored and any non-Lecturers will not be admitted. This is again to protect definite-term lecturers and to enable a free forum for dialogue and discussion.

The Zoom meeting link for The Status of Lecturers Forum is here - please register now:

We encourage you to attend and an important announcement will be made during this event. You won't want to miss it!
