We are shocked and saddened by the violence that took place on June 28th on the University of Waterloo campus. Our hearts are with those who were directly affected, just as we also think of the entire University of Waterloo community and our neighbors at Conestoga and Wilfrid Laurier.
Gender based violence is unacceptable and we must stand against it, whether it be as overt as this week’s attacks or the more subtle and insidious forms that many unfortunately encounter on campus. We are proud that the University of Waterloo has committed to flying the Pride and Two-Spirit flags until the end of July. We echo President Goel’s statement in calling for this to be a time that all of us at the University of Waterloo “show the world that we are committed to fostering an inclusive, safe, and welcoming environment for all members of our community.” The university has also made many resources available for both employees and students.
As a community of teachers and students, we know that classrooms are special places, and that these events strike at the heart of what it is to seek knowledge together. We also know that the time will come when we begin to heal and when we will be able to reflect on these events. For now, we hope that we can all continue to support one another as we contribute to building a safe and inclusive community here at the University of Waterloo.
Below is a list of upcoming events to support UWaterloo staff, students, and faculty. We will do our best to keep this list up to date; please feel free to reach out to us at lecturersconnect@gmail.com to add to this list.
