Things That Take Less Time Than P76

Policy 76 on Faculty Appointments has been under revision of some form or other since 2014. Eight years (and counting!) is a long time is an exceptional amount of time by any standard, and that includes the “Waterloo Way”.

If you need a refresher, here’s how policy development works at UW.

Perhaps these years have gone by quickly for you, or perhaps you’ve felt them drag by. Either way, here are a few reference points to put things into context. Here is our (non-exhaustive) list of things that take (or have taken) less time than P76:

2 years:

  • Expansion of the Applied Health Sciences building (2014–2016)

  • Construction of the CN tower (1973-1975)

  • Gestation period of an elephant (23 months)

3 years:

  • Construction of the Science Teaching Complex (2012–2015) and E7 (2015-2018)

  • Construction of the SkyDome (1986-1989)

  • Marie Curie isolates radium (1898-1902)

4 years:

  • The Manhattan project (1942-1946)

  • Beethoven writes his Fifth Symphony (1804-1809)

  • Toni Morrison writes Beloved (1983-1987)

5 years:

  • Constructing the Region of Waterloo ION (2014-2019)

  • Marriage of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston (2000-2005)

  • Building of the Canadian Pacific Railway (1881-1886)

6 years:

  • Alexander the Great’s Empire

  • Leo Tolstoy writes War and Peace (1863-1893)

  • Lifespan of the Microsoft Zune (2006-2012)

  • Length of the Spirit Mars Exploration Rover mission (2004-2010)

7 years:

  • Development of electron microscope (1931-1938)

  • Nirvana’s music career (1987-1994)

  • Production of Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty (1951-1958)

8 years:

  • Einstein develops general relativity theory (1907-1915)

  • Apollo mission lands on the moon (1961-1969)

  • The Beatles’ music career (1962-1970)

  • Production and filming of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy (1997-2004)

With no clear end in sight, we’re barreling towards at least one more year (9 years: the time it took Andrew Wiles to prove Fermat’s Last Theorem) or more (10 years: the time it took for Odysseus to journey home following the Trojan war; 12 years: the time it takes for Jupiter to orbit the sun).
