Workload
Who Establishes & Assigns Workload?
Currently, workload is not something that is negotiated at the University of Waterloo. As a result, workload is highly variable amongst Lecturers and differs significantly between faculties and departments/units (and sometimes even within departments/units). The employer, again, has an upper hand and is able to determine a Lecturer's workload unilaterally. There isn't much recourse available for individual faculty members. What is a "normal" workload? What is considered to be one "course" or "teaching task"?

It is important to note that workload is commonly negotiated at other universities. Here are a few examples:
Queen’s University Workload Policy (see Article 37)
University of Guelph Workload Policy (see Article 15)
University of Ontario Institute of Technology Workload Policy (see Article 16)
University of Ottawa Workload Policy
University of Toronto Workload Policy
University of Western Ontario Workload Policy (see “Workload” Article)
York University Workload Policy (see Section 18)
